Operation HERRICK — British patrols in Helmand, Afghanistan.

HERRICK was the name used for UK military operations in Afghanistan from 2002 to 2014, with Helmand becoming the centre of the British combat deployment from 2006. Patrols through fields, compounds, tracks and settlements formed a large part of daily operations and placed enormous importance on reading the ground and maintaining contact within small teams.

We chose a patrol scene because it represents the campaign at human scale. Rather than a map of the whole province or a large vehicle, the artwork focuses on the people moving through the terrain and the routine that defined many tours.
