Vallon Patrols in Helmand: IED Search, Point Men & the Slow Ground of Operation HERRICK // Log 043

For me, the Vallon metal detector is one of those pieces of equipment that instantly takes me back to Afghanistan. It became almost as visually familiar as a rifle, body armour or a patrol base because the IED threat shaped so much of how we moved through Helmand.

I served as a mortarman with The Royal Welsh in Afghanistan. What stays with me is not some technical search drill. It is the effect the threat had on everybody: the pace, the concentration, the spacing, the fatigue and that constant awareness that completely ordinary-looking ground could decide what the whole patrol was able to do. I am deliberately not reproducing operational search procedures here.

The IED threat

Improvised explosive devices became one of the defining threats of the later British campaign in Helmand. They affected coalition troops, Afghan security personnel and civilians and could be placed where normal patterns of movement made roads, tracks and approaches predictable.

The tactical consequence was much bigger than the device itself. Ground became something you had to read. Movement that might otherwise have been routine demanded more caution, more time and often specialist support.

What “Vallon” meant to us

Vallon is the manufacturer associated with handheld metal-detection systems used by British forces. Improved detectors were introduced during the campaign as one part of a much wider effort to reduce the IED threat.

The detector did not identify every hazard, and the man carrying it was not a one-person clearance team. Counter-IED work depended on intelligence, visual awareness, commanders, specialist search, engineers, electronic protection and explosive-ordnance-disposal capability around the person carrying the detector.

The lead search role

Contemporary British accounts often use the informal term “Vallon man” for the soldier at or near the front of a patrol using the detector. I think the significance of that job is easier to understand as a human burden than as a piece of equipment.

Everybody behind needed a route forward. The soldier searching the immediate ground therefore carried a disproportionate concentration burden, often moving slowly in heat, body armour and difficult terrain while everyone else depended on what he was finding—or not finding.

Helmand's Green Zone already restricted movement with walls, ditches, narrow tracks and irrigation crossings. Persistent IED risk made those constraints more important because routes could not simply be chosen for speed or convenience.

That created a very particular patrol rhythm. People behind the lead element often followed the confidence of a searched path rather than moving freely across ground that looked completely harmless. Short distances on a map could consume a lot of time and attention.

An adaptation contest

Insurgent methods changed as coalition countermeasures changed, and coalition technology and procedures changed in response. For me, the important historical point is that cycle of adaptation, not the mechanics of individual devices.

No detector, jammer or search team ever created a final technological answer. Counter-IED work remained layered: equipment, intelligence, training, judgement and specialist support all mattered.

Search was a team problem

Popular imagery can make the detector operator look like the man single-handedly “clearing” a route. That is misleading. He was the most visible part of a much larger system whose effectiveness depended on other people and information.

Command decisions about where and when to move, intelligence on patterns of activity, engineering support, electronic protection and specialist response all shaped the risk. The detector operator mattered precisely because the patrol depended on the network around him.

Afghan forces and transition

British and US personnel also trained Afghan security forces in IED recognition and counter-IED capability. That transfer became increasingly important as Afghan forces took the lead for security and coalition combat forces drew down.

Why I remember the Vallon

Military equipment becomes historically significant when it gets tied to something people repeatedly had to do. The Vallon was not glamorous. I remember it because it represents patience, concentration, vulnerability and the slow routine of moving through contested ground.

That is why I wanted it in Field Notes. It says more about the everyday rhythm of Helmand than another staged action photograph ever could.
