During Operation HERRICK in Afghanistan, the handheld Vallon metal detector became a familiar piece of equipment on British foot patrols searching for the metal components of improvised explosive devices. We chose this subject because it represents the slow, methodical and often unseen work of moving through dangerous ground — a very different image of the campaign from the usual action-led artwork.

The black-and-white patrol illustration keeps the focus on the people, equipment and terrain without claiming a particular unit or individual.
