Merville Battery 6 June 1944 T-Shirt — 9 Para D-Day

Merville Battery, 6 June 1944. Lieutenant Colonel Terence Otway’s 9th Parachute Battalion was tasked with assaulting the German coastal battery before the seaborne landings.

The airborne drop scattered the battalion and much of its specialist equipment, forcing a far smaller force than planned to attack with what it had. The assault succeeded in breaking into the position, but the mission’s tactical result and the battery’s later ability to fire require more nuance than a simple “destroyed before D-Day” legend.
