Merville Battery 6 June 1944: Complete Field Guide — 9 Para, Scattered Drop & Assault Before Dawn // Log 035
Merville Battery, 6 June 1944. Before the first assault troops reached Sword Beach, 9th Parachute Battalion had been given a separate problem several miles inland: silence a heavily fortified German coastal battery believed to contain four 150 mm guns capable of firing into the invasion area.
I spent 12 years with The Royal Welsh as a mortarman. I was not at Normandy, and this is not written as though modern service reproduces the experience of 1944. What a mortar background does change is the way I read Merville: gun range, observation, fire control, ammunition, dead ground, timing and what happens when the fire-support threat has to be removed before another force crosses its start line. The historical account below is built from the cited airborne, museum and contemporary sources.

Why Merville mattered
The battery stood east of the Orne, behind the coast facing the British invasion sector. Allied intelligence believed its four concrete casemates held 150 mm guns with enough range and destructive power to threaten Sword Beach and shipping offshore. Repeated bombing had not provided enough confidence that the position had been neutralised.
That made Merville an operational problem rather than simply a local strongpoint. Sword Beach could not be isolated from the airborne battle. British 6th Airborne Division was tasked with protecting the invasion’s eastern flank, seizing the Orne and Caen Canal crossings, destroying bridges farther east and removing the artillery threat at Merville before the seaborne assault developed.
The intelligence estimate was wrong about the calibre of the guns, but that does not make the original decision irrational. Commanders had to act on what could be established before D-Day, and a protected battery believed capable of firing heavy shells into an invasion beach could not simply be ignored.
The ground and the battery
Merville was not four guns sitting in an open field. The position combined reinforced casemates with trenches, machine-gun posts, anti-aircraft weapons, barbed wire, a broad minefield and an anti-tank ditch. The gun positions faced generally toward the coast, while the close-defence system made any approach on foot dangerous.
The German garrison is commonly given at about 130 men: roughly eighty artillerymen of 1./Artillerie-Regiment 1716 together with around fifty engineers and supporting defenders. Steiner was the battery commander, although he was away from the main battery position at the coastal observation post during the British assault.
Order of battle: British assault force
The original plan was much larger and more sophisticated than the force that eventually attacked. The working structure included:
- 9th (Essex) Parachute Battalion — the main assault force under Lieutenant Colonel Terence Otway.
- 3rd Parachute Brigade, 6th Airborne Division — the higher formation controlling the mission.
- Reconnaissance and pathfinder elements — required to locate the objective, mark routes and identify passages through the minefield.
- Royal Engineers and specialist demolition equipment — intended to breach obstacles and destroy the guns.
- Anti-mine equipment, jeeps and heavier weapons — built into the plan but largely lost or scattered during the airborne insertion.
- Medical support — including airborne medical personnel.
- Three Horsa gliders carrying a special assault group — intended to land directly into or immediately beside the battery during the attack.
- Naval fire support link — HMS Arethusa was part of the wider fire plan if the battery had not been neutralised.
On paper, this was a layered assault with redundancy. In Normandy, most of those layers disappeared before Otway reached the point of decision.
Order of battle: German defence
- 1./Artillerie-Regiment 1716, 716. Infanterie-Division — the battery’s artillery component.
- Battery commander: Oberleutnant Raimund Steiner.
- Artillery: four Czech 100 mm leFH 14/19(t) howitzers inside concrete casemates.
- Close defence: machine-gun positions, a 20 mm anti-aircraft weapon, wire, mines, trenches and anti-tank obstacles.
- Approximate garrison: about 130 men when artillerymen and engineer/support personnel are counted together.
The 716th Infantry Division defended a wide stretch of the Normandy coast. Merville therefore formed one part of a larger German defensive network rather than an isolated fort.
Terence Otway and the plan

Otway had only a short period to turn intelligence photographs and mission requirements into a battalion assault. A full-scale representation of the position was built in England so the troops could rehearse the obstacle system, casemate layout and individual tasks repeatedly.
The principle was straightforward: reconnaissance would confirm the position and routes; bombers would attack; parachute troops and specialists would assemble; engineers would breach the defences; gliders would deliver an additional force close to the guns; and the battery would be neutralised before it could interfere with Sword Beach.
The weakness in the plan was the same weakness in every airborne operation: all of those components first had to arrive in the right place.
The drop: the plan comes apart
The night insertion was badly scattered. Navigation, damaged pathfinder equipment, smoke and the general friction of a large night airborne operation spread men and equipment across the countryside. Some landed in flooded areas around the Dives. Others were many kilometres from the intended drop zone.
Most of the heavy and specialist equipment failed to reach the rendezvous. The carefully prepared assault package was reduced to the weapons and explosives that individual paratroopers had physically carried with them.
By about 02:50, only around 150 men were available to Otway. The mission deadline had not moved.
The decision: attack with what is present
This is the central command problem at Merville. Otway could delay and gather more men, but every minute reduced the chance of silencing the battery before Sword Beach. He could abandon the mission and preserve the force, but the invasion plan assumed the guns would be dealt with. Or he could attack a fortified position with roughly a quarter of the manpower and only a fraction of the equipment on which the rehearsed plan depended.
He chose to attack.
Reconnaissance personnel had still achieved something crucial: they had studied the defences and marked passages through the minefield. That information became more valuable as the rest of the plan collapsed.
The assault before dawn
The reduced force moved toward the battery and reorganised around the men and weapons actually available. The attack developed through narrow routes in the minefield while German machine guns and other defensive positions engaged the paratroopers at close range.
The glider element did not arrive as planned. One glider passed across the position and others came down outside the battery, but the disruption contributed to the confusion already developing among the defenders.
British assault parties broke into the position and fought between the casemates, trenches and weapon pits. With the planned demolition stores missing, the paratroopers improvised. Gammon bombs, grenades and whatever explosives could be assembled were used to damage the guns and their mechanisms.
Only after reaching the casemates did the troops discover that the weapons were not the expected 150 mm guns. They were older Czech 100 mm howitzers. The intelligence error changed what the battery actually was; it did not change the fighting already required to reach it.
Frederick Glover: the glider force arrives into the fight
Sergeant Frederick Glover of A Company, 9th Parachute Battalion, was part of the special glider force intended to crash-land into the battery. His first-hand account is one of the strongest surviving descriptions of what the plan felt like from inside the aircraft.
As the glider crossed the French coast, Glover remembered the sudden silence after release from the tow and the thought: “no turning back now; we are going in!”
His Horsa was hit by 20 mm fire. Glover was wounded in both legs before the aircraft crash-landed near the battery. The survivors then found themselves in an immediate firefight with German troops moving to reinforce the position. Glover later made it to the battery after the main assault, where he found only a much smaller surviving force still on its feet.

What happened to the guns?
The assault succeeded in disabling the battery during the period in which it was expected to pose the greatest threat to the landings. The paratroopers did not have the heavy demolition equipment intended for the job, so destruction was improvised and uneven.
That distinction matters. Merville was neutralised temporarily; it was not permanently erased from the battlefield. German troops later returned to the position and some guns were restored to service. The correct historical conclusion is therefore narrower than the legend: 9 Para prevented the battery from functioning as planned during the critical opening phase of D-Day, at very high cost.
Casualties
Exact casualty totals vary depending on which point of the operation is counted and how missing, wounded and later-returning men are treated. Contemporary and later accounts agree on the scale: roughly half of the reduced assault force became casualties during the attack.
D-Day Overlord gives about seventy British killed or wounded in the battery action, with roughly twenty-two German dead and a similar number captured. Glover’s testimony remembers only about sixty British soldiers still on their feet when he reached the gun position. Rather than force those different accounting methods into one false number, Gallus leaves the boundary visible.
Intelligence error: were the guns really a threat?
The discovery of 100 mm guns instead of 150 mm pieces has always complicated the Merville story. In hindsight, the battery was less powerful than Allied intelligence feared. That does not mean it was harmless: the guns still had the range to threaten parts of the Sword sector, and the concrete position had survived previous attempts to neutralise it from the air.
The useful lesson is about decisions under uncertainty. Intelligence rarely gives a commander perfect knowledge. The invasion staff had evidence of a fortified battery whose weapon calibre could not be confirmed from outside the casemates. They planned against the more dangerous credible case.
What I notice as a mortarman
For me, the strongest lesson is not simply that 150 men attacked a defended battery. It is the relationship between artillery threat and time.
A gun position is only useful if it can observe, receive fire orders, keep ammunition moving and remain able to fire at the moment its target matters. The British mission therefore did not require Merville to disappear forever. It required the battery to be unable to engage the invasion effectively during the window when Sword Beach and the fleet were most exposed.
The second lesson is what happens when support disappears. The original plan contained engineers, specialist charges, heavy weapons, vehicles, medical support, gliders and communications. Otway reached the objective without most of it. From that point, every missing capability became a tactical problem for the men carrying rifles, Stens, grenades and the explosives that remained.
The third is reconnaissance. The marked minefield routes survived the collapse of the larger plan and gave the reduced assault force a way into the position. One piece of information, obtained before the attack, retained its value when many other assumptions failed.
After Merville
The survivors could not remain concentrated indefinitely at the battery. 9 Para still had follow-on tasks within the eastern airborne bridgehead, including movement toward Le Plein. The battalion continued fighting while scattered men filtered back in over the following hours and days.
Merville therefore belongs inside the wider Operation Tonga story. Pegasus Bridge, the Orne crossings, the Merville Battery and the destroyed Dives bridges were separate tactical actions serving one operational purpose: protect the left flank of the Normandy invasion long enough for the seaborne force to establish itself.
