Kohima, 1944. The fighting at Kohima formed part of the Japanese offensive into north-east India and the wider battles of Imphal and Kohima. British and Indian troops held a tight defensive perimeter around Garrison Hill through bitter close-quarter fighting before relief forces arrived in April; the struggle around Kohima continued into June.
Together with Imphal, the battle became a decisive defeat for the Japanese offensive and a turning point in the Burma campaign. The Gallus artwork uses the ridgelines, jungle terrain and 1944 reference to keep the design anchored to the place and campaign rather than generic Second World War imagery.
