By 1917 the First World War had already transformed the appearance and experience of the soldier: steel helmet, web equipment, mud, shell-damaged ground and a battlefield shaped by artillery. We chose a single infantry figure because it brings the vast scale of the war back to the individual carrying his kit through it.

The archival, sketch-like treatment keeps the design reflective and historically grounded rather than theatrical.
