The Cenotaph in Whitehall — the centre of Britain’s national remembrance ceremonies.
Designed by Edwin Lutyens and unveiled in permanent stone in 1920, the Cenotaph became a focus for remembrance of the First World War and later conflicts. Every Remembrance Sunday, wreaths are laid there as the country pauses to remember the dead of the Armed Forces and associated services.
We chose the Cenotaph because it represents remembrance through a place rather than a battlefield. Its deliberately simple form has become instantly recognisable, making it an appropriate subject for a restrained memorial design.
