Merville Gun Battery was one of the German coastal positions targeted by British airborne forces in the opening hours of D-Day.
On 6 June 1944, the 9th (Essex) Parachute Battalion attacked the battery as part of the airborne operation supporting the Normandy landings. The position was believed capable of threatening the Sword Beach landing area, making its neutralisation an important objective. We chose a sketch and map-like treatment of the fortifications to keep the design focused on the place, the operation and the men involved rather than turning the action into a generic battle slogan.
