Rows of headstones across France and Belgium have become one of the most powerful landscapes of the Great War.
The ordered cemeteries created for the dead of 1914–1918 turn enormous casualty figures back into individual names, regiments and lives. Their repetition is part of what makes them so striking: each stone is separate, but together they show the scale of the loss.
We chose the silent field because remembrance does not always need a soldier, weapon or slogan. Sometimes the landscape left behind says more. The grainy treatment is intended to feel closer to an old photograph than a modern graphic.
