Flanders, 1914–1918 — a landscape that became shorthand for the cost of the Great War.
Fighting across Belgium and northern France transformed fields, villages and ridgelines into some of the most heavily contested ground of the First World War. The poppy became linked with that landscape through the flowers seen on disturbed soil and through John McCrae’s poem In Flanders Fields.
We chose the soldier-and-poppy image because it connects the human figure with the place that came to symbolise an entire generation’s war. The weathered treatment keeps it closer to an old photograph or field document than a bright commemorative graphic.
