James Langley Dalton VC — Rorke’s Drift, 1879.

Dalton was an experienced former soldier serving with the Army Commissariat Department at Rorke’s Drift. He played an important role in preparing the position for defence and was later awarded the Victoria Cross. We chose to represent him because the famous story is often reduced to a handful of names, while Dalton’s experience, judgement and contribution show how much the defence depended on practical preparation as well as courage under fire.

The portrait-led artwork keeps the focus on the individual and the history rather than on heroic exaggeration.
