Merville Gun Battery — D-Day, 6 June 1944.

The German coastal position at Merville was attacked by the 9th (Essex) Parachute Battalion during the British airborne operation on the eastern flank of the Normandy landings. The battery was believed capable of threatening Sword Beach, making its neutralisation an important objective.
