Lochnagar Crater, 1 July 1916. The crater was created when a British mine beneath the German position at La Boisselle was detonated shortly before the opening assault on the first day of the Somme.

This design marks the ground itself rather than turning the explosion into spectacle. Lochnagar survives as a physical scar from the battle and today functions as a place of remembrance for the men who fought and died around La Boisselle.
