The Somme, 1916. This design marks one of the defining campaigns of the First World War.

The offensive opened on 1 July 1916 and developed into months of fighting across the Somme battlefield. British and French forces attacked a deeply prepared German defensive system of trenches, strongpoints, wire and dugouts. The campaign is remembered for the scale of the losses, but also for the way artillery, infantry tactics, logistics, air power and the first battlefield use of tanks evolved through the fighting.
