Lochnagar Crater, La Boisselle — 1 July 1916.

At 7:28 a.m. on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, British tunnellers detonated a huge mine beneath the German position near La Boisselle. The explosion created what became known as Lochnagar Crater, one of the most recognisable surviving features of the Somme battlefield.

This design marks the place, date and extraordinary scale of the underground war that preceded the infantry assault. Today the crater is preserved as a site of remembrance for those who fought and died on the Somme.
