By 2007 the British deployment in southern Iraq was centred heavily on Basra, a dense city where military operations, local life, heat, traffic and fortified positions existed side by side. A street scene captures a different part of campaign history from maps and vehicles: the actual urban environment through which people moved every day.

We chose Basra at street level because places are remembered through ordinary details as much as major incidents. Concrete, shopfronts, roads and dust give the campaign a recognisable setting without pretending that one image can summarise the entire deployment.
