Militant leader targeted by the U.S. reconnaissance mission during Operation Red Wings in June 2005. U.S. Navy accounts describe Shah as leading an anti-coalition guerrilla group in the Kunar region aligned with the Taliban and other militants.

Danny Dietz

Gunner’s Mate 2nd Class (SEAL) Danny Dietz was a member of Michael Murphy’s four-man Navy SEAL reconnaissance team during Operation Red Wings. He was killed during the 28 June 2005 fight after the patrol was compromised.

Matthew Axelson

Sonar Technician 2nd Class (SEAL) Matthew Axelson was one of the four Navy SEALs on the Operation Red Wings reconnaissance patrol. He was killed during the 28 June 2005 engagement.

Marcus Luttrell

Hospital Corpsman 2nd Class (SEAL) Marcus Luttrell was the fourth member of the Operation Red Wings reconnaissance patrol and the only member of the four-man team to survive the engagement. He was sheltered by local Afghans before being recovered by U.S. forces.
