Utah Beach, 6 June 1944. The westernmost D-Day landing beach was assaulted by the U.S. 4th Infantry Division while American airborne forces fought inland to secure causeways, bridges and key ground across the Cotentin.

The landing came ashore south of the planned point, but local command decisions and the airborne battle inland helped turn that displacement into an advantage rather than a disaster.
