Sainte-Mère-Église, 6 June 1944. The Normandy town became one of the defining locations of the American airborne operation on D-Day.

Elements of the 82nd Airborne Division fought to secure the town and the crossings around the Merderet while the 101st Airborne operated farther south toward the Utah Beach exits and Carentan. Sainte-Mère-Église therefore belongs to the wider airborne battle for the Cotentin, not to a single parachutist legend.
