  • Heritage & Transit // Log 001

We did not start Gallus because we wanted to be in the fashion business. To be honest, most of us would probably be quite happy never looking at another clothing catalogue again. We started this because after three and a half decades in the infantry, you develop a very specific—and slightly grumpy—relationship with your kit.

Between the two of us, there are 35 years of infantry experience. That is a lot of time spent standing in the rain, sitting on bergens, and waiting for transport that is invariably late. We have done tours of Bosnia, Kosovo, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Somalia. We have also done the usual exercises in places that were either far too hot or much too damp, where the only thing that really mattered was whether your gear actually worked.

    The Reality of the Transit

The Experience: 35 years of carrying weight over difficult ground teaches you what matters.

The Knowledge: Watching kit fail in Kosovo or Helmand province makes you appreciate quality. When your gear lets you down at the wrong moment, you remember it.

The Data: We use coordinates because places like Mametz Wood or a ridge in Afghanistan are not just names on a map—they are real, muddy locations where the difference between good kit and rubbish kit becomes very clear.

The Gallus is about that transit. It is about the journey from the history we lived through to the modern trails we walk now. We make things that are heavy and solid because that is what we always wanted when we were actually out there. The shirts fit well enough for most people to get on with their day. They are just solid items for the work that needs doing.

No fuss. No fashion. Just kit that works.
